When should we use popup windows?

There is ongoing debate in the Web Standards community about when, and if, we should use popup windows. Many believe that three good times are:

  • for image files, it's great to open the image in a css-styled popup window, to which you may add your own custom features like headers, background images, footers, etc. The fullsize images do not consume bandwidth until they are requested.
  • for links to another website - you probably worry that a visitor will simply wander away from your site, never to return. Open a new window for that other site and yours remains safe.
  • for pdf docs, or Word docs (or other files that open in special plugins) I bet we've all closed an Acrobat Reader window, only to be surprised we just closed our browser! Most modern browsers allow the user to control whether requested popup windows will open as new windows, or as new tabs. divaPOPgold does its best to open in a new window, but may be forced to open in a new tab instead.
